I know she wasn’t a celebrity, but she might have become one.  She may have become an iconic music star or a world famous actress.  She might have become a celebrated author.  Perhaps she would have become a medical doctor or researcher and found a definitive cure for hiv or cancer.  Who knows...maybe she would have become the first female president of the United States!  Or maybe she would have been a really great wife and mother.  If her future was as bright as her smile, she was destined for greatness.

But neither we nor her devastated, loving family will ever know because 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts’ life was stolen from her by a monster.  What we do know, at least by the accounts of those who knew her well, she was a caring, special young woman who will never be forgotten.

I thought I would post this because Mollie’s non-famous life was every bit as important as the lives of all the celebrities that we admire.  It’s just heartbreaking that such a young, promising life was taken from the world far too soon.  So Rest In Peace, Mollie Tibbetts.  We are thinking of you.

Well, of course her life could have turned out a number of ways.  But unfortunately, the various roads she might have traveled came to an abrupt end because of some POS who stole from her the greatest gift that anyone of us is ever given.  You can read above my justifications for posting this.  I think they’re pretty solid.  Mollie’s life, at least up until her twentieth year, was just like my life...pretty average I suppose.  But I think the lives of average people should be celebrated.  This gives some recognition to the fact that a life like Mollie’s was just as valuable as the life of say...Mick Jagger or Michael Jordan or whoever.  We all, including myself, probably pay a bit too much homage to the lives of celebrities who put their pants on one leg at a time just like we do.

Honestly, if I see a discussion I’m not interested in, I just move along to the next one.  Nothing commands me to read through every discussion on this site.  If you don’t like one, just go to the next.  Josh mentioned something about people potentially getting butt-hurt over something.  But he’s really the the only person I’ve seen so far get his underwear in a wad over this.

And in my opinion, this discussion is a strange thing to get upset about...unless you’re feeling upset for Mollie Tibbetts’ family.  Now they really have good reason to feel angry.

But again, if you don’t like a discussion, just move along.  And that’s my input, like it or not.

Having an opposing opinion is fine, goodcat.  That’s what we do on this site.  But advocating censoring my discussion is more than just having an opposing opinion.  And having an opposing opinion doesn’t mean you need to be rude about it.

I may not have explained my position properly..

Pardon me for that.

But... If you didnt like my response .. Then you need not reply as well ... Do you understand my point?

And this is exactly what I was getting at about General Discussion groups. They always go sideways.

The problem with bypassing a thread is that it must be read to realize we should not have read it hahaha

But it's there so we read it

Yes I understand this is not a good interruption but I have deeper reasons for doing so.

And I wanted to show that Josh's opinion is not alone.

So ... Why are you taking our responses to heart? You could easily not respond right?

You are defending what you think is right and so are we.

And that my friend is called Freewill

Lets leave it here shall we please

Carry on.... As you were

You guys make very good points. I could've just moved along. I guess I thought....perhaps we could nip this in the bud. I mean, I already see a lot of discussions I just "move along" without commenting. But...I just don't see the point of tomorrow, seeing a thread about James' Aunt Edna, who was a dear woman, and how he just wanted a tribute to her here, because...although she never got an autograph, she was every bit as important to him as Michael Jordan.

Here in San Diego, a semi-famous person named "McSkillet" took his $500,000 MacLaren sports car, and drove the wrong way on the freeway at 100 mph to kill himself, after losing a lot of money. Killed two people, who are good friends with a friend of mine. I didn't post it. What's the point?

We all probably have stories like this happen a lot. And, it just doesn't seem like an entire thread needs to be devoted to people who die, that have NOTHING to do with autographs. But, if it makes you guys feel great, like you did your good deed, to speak well of a person that recently died...I guess you can do it. It's just kind of goofy, that's all.

What immediately popped into my head was to start a discussion titled, “RIP Aunt Edna,” to counter the brilliant sarcasm in your first paragraph that was directed toward me.  But I don’t have a recently-deceased Aunt Edna.  I do have have a recently-deceased Aunt Madeline, but it’s been about six months since her passing so I guess I won’t, although she is certainly deserving of a tribute...but our family took care of that.

Keep in mind that while you are directing your cynicism and sarcasm at me for my goofy, silly little discussion, as Tim pointed out, you are disrespecting the opinions of other members here who are glad that I posted this.  I don’t personally get into tearing down other members.  But at least insulting other members isn’t goofy; it’s just a pointless, ridiculous thing to do.

Your concern that my post could lead to AML becoming an obituary page is...well...silly and nonsensical.  As far as I can remember, this is my first “RIP” discussion regarding a non-famous person.  And I don’t believe I’ve seen any other previously...other than tributes after terrorist attacks.  So I certainly don’t think this will become habit-forming.  Mollie Tibbetts’ disappearance and murder became a big news story.  And it had a tragic ending.  Gosh, Josh I don’t know what came over me. It did upset me.  It made me angry and sad, and so I committed the terrible offense of posting a tribute to her.  I’m glad I did, and others are too.

And there’s no need to get nasty, sarcastic, and rude about it.  I don’t tend to be confrontational on this site, and I certainly wasn’t expecting to get hammered for posting a tribute to the life of a murdered innocent young girl.  And certainly it’s unfortunate and tragic about the deaths of the mother and daughter in San Diego.

But personally, I do think it’s kind of nice to have an area where, if we want, we members can post about subjects other than autographs.  I brought this up a few weeks ago, and a few others liked the idea.

Seriously though, ripping into me for posting this is pretty sad on your part.  Obviously this young girl’s brutal murder didn’t affect you in the same manner it did some of the other members here.  Kudos to you for being so strong.

surviving such tragedies thrown your way has forged some truly extrordinay people

RIP JOHN MCAIN

I agree that nothing should be "censored" on this site -- but I do come here to read about and discuss autographs and there are PLENTY of other sites to discuss the grim realities of our world today.

+1

"...there are PLENTY of other sites to discuss the grim realities of our world today..."

This is a truth.

Yes, that is true.  But when I brought up the idea a few weeks ago about posting about subjects other autographs, I did mention that I knew there were other websites for other topics.  But don’t I know anyone else on any other forums, but I do know several people here.  And I’m not really looking to join any other forums right now.

When I brought up talking about subjects other than autographs, I actually wasn’t even thinking about obits.  I was thinking more so about movies and TV shows, sports whatever.  I actually started a discussion about the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story, and people chimed in.  I think it was a nice little change of pace.

IMO this site should be about autographs and nothing else!

I come here to get away from the sometimes sad and terrible world we live in. To be able to focus on nothing else than fun autographs is what makes this a great site, I don’t want to change that. I’m only here to read what you guys and girls think about autographs. It may sound harsh, but in general I’m not interested in what you think about any other topic than that...

Because I think we are opening a can of worms if we allow other topics than autographs here. What’s next to start a thread about, Trump, the lack of democracy in Iran, abortion, the climat??? Because in this thread solely there have already been comments from different members about illegally aliens, death penalty and deportions and I don’t want to read about that stuff here at AML!!!

And the ”just bypass the thread then” replies isn’t valid, since the Latest activity field now is full with replies (incl mine...) from this thread that has nothing to do with autographs...

Although a nice thought, this is a thread that IMO doesn’t belong here on AML.

Well said Cogo

And this is really my point

I just didn't say it in well written verse

I've never been a member of a forum where the General Discussion group wasn't full of combat and divided it's members. I'd really hate to see that virus infect this very exclusive group of people who I value so much. This is really a little paradise among the s*** of the internet world.

The biggest general discussion forum is Facebook and look what's going on there

I believe the folks here wish to keep AML a turmoil free zone... I hope ;)
