Should I get a second (opinion) authentication on a Wilt Chamberlain auto?

Hi,

I just bought this Wilt Chamberlain autograph off of eBay and it is authenticated by Beckett. But I've been reading horror stories about Beckett and JSA is doing authentications in a store near me. Should I get a second opinion from JSA or not bother?

Thanks

Hi Joey,

You should be fine just getting opinions here that confirm BAS's COA.

There should be no need.  Even the top TPAs make mistakes sometimes.  BAS is as good as the others.

I think you’re fine.  I strongly believe this is authentic!

Hopefully, just to set your mind at ease, I might have added...this is a no-doubter in my opinion.

I would suggest learning by self education what you can about the autograph(s) in question - what it should look like where it signed and at what angle etc. This takes time, but will remove your reliance on a slip of paper that may be errant, or not. I never use any TPG and I never recommend anything with a sticker defacing it. Join in the game and learn to form your own opinion. :) It is your money - no entity will look out for you like...you!

I agree, Eric.  I have been debating whether or not to send several of my items to PSA to have them authenticated.  I have no concerns about their authenticity, and I never intend to sell them.  What would be the point?  The stickers do not bother me.

If I am buying an authenticated item, and it’s a photo, I do prefer for the sticker to be on the item (usually only with photos though) so I know I’m not getting a very well-crafted copy.  I was burned by some very well-made copies several years ago.  But if the sticker is going to be on the photo, the TPA should do as was done with the OP, and put it on the back.

If you're sure an autograph is real, I wouldn't have one authenticated unless you were planning to sell soon. You don't know who will be the most desirable authenicators 10-20 years down the road.

I think that’s very true, Steve.

I would not pay for a second TPA unless Beckett gets hit by a scandal which rocks the market. Although, on a sports autograph, wouldn't the best choice be PSA anyway?

I trust JSA for sports as well.

Good to know. I don't collect any sports just always thought PSA was strong in that field.
