Hello,

I obtained three signed Hemingway books from the same collection and am trying to determine if they are legitimate.  Any opinions or direction on who I should send them to would be appreciated.

Thanks,

CJ

These were shared as an example on Autograph Hounds.   "Peter Lorre" exemplars with duplication involved.  Some who have interest in classic film autographs are beginning to spot this kind of activity in searches.

Both are creations? Or one? Neither scan is ideal.

The first scan is not ideal, you are correct, but it is what was available online.

The dealer did the second tan one that he received.   I think he did a very good hi-res scan for getting a good look at it.  Click on it to see more if there is further interest.

This is a further close-up of a small section of the tan one.

What I am getting is very fuzzy?

I did. It is fuzzy.

I think that's part of the point with these.  They are fuzzy in actuality.

The Autograph Hounds member who provided these photos actually purchased the salmon colored one (at least according to the photos that accompanied the seller's listing).  The member was sent the tan colored one instead.  They are interchangeable for the seller, apparently.

Thank goodness. One can see enough even in this fuzzy scan to stay away.

Looking at two side by side it's obvious.  Most potential buyers do not have that advantage.  We only have the two scan because the purchaser thought he was buying the salmon one and was sent the tan one in reality.

Also, many listings on eBay don't have the best of accompanying scans to see things like this.

I'd not need a side by side to see that. I would hope those obvious "ink" problems would scream to the collector. It is always advisable to look at many items before selecting one - it saves money and helps ensure quality as one will see what is "OK", "good", "better" and "best" in terms of quality/prices. While doing that, note those prices. If you are buying a CLASSIC signed book with a signature that is, alone, worth over $2,000 for $500 (a $5,000+  book!), there is most probably something wrong.

We're just doing our little part over there to help fellow collectors.  Sorry for insulting your level of mastery. Not intentional on my part.  It seemed helpful to the members who were reading it on the other group, which is the only reason I shared on this thread.  I thought I saw something that might be helpful in relation to the Hemingways.

Thanks for the lecture as well.

I'll go back to my place🙃

Come on now, Eddy. I was not lecturing you or even speaking to you. I was speaking to the notion of looking into what one buys before buying it. We just saw someone many bid tens of thousands of dollars on something that a modest modicum of research would have prevented.
