Beatles A Hard Day’s Night SP From Weiss Auctions and A Comparison To Facsimile Signatures

This Beatles SP is coming up for auction from Weiss Auctions on 10/16.

Here’s a comparison of each signature from the SP to the respective signature from a single set of facsimile stamped signatures.

And the t in McCartney looks very shaky, as if it had been written during an earthquake.

I am baffled how this passed the Quick Opinion.  Even without seeing the stamped versions that Ballroom has posted, the one in the OP is shaky, and has several technical issues that anyone that studies Beatles signatures would pick up.   It really is a head scratcher.

I totally agree. When I first glanced at the OP I thought immediately that it was off and was amazed to see that anyone had thought otherwise. The OP "signatures" also looked printed to me.

Any thoughts about the loop of the “H” in John’s signature? It’s narrower than the one from the comparison facsimile signature. Towards the bottom it curves slightly to the left to match the position of the other signature prior to the upstroke.

Great observation - look quite different. There are a few little things like this but if these are Official Fan Club stamps I would not expect those variations. Also the missing underline.

Take a look at Paul’s “P”s. It looks like the one on the photo mistakenly has a pen lift at the bottom and then the short upstroke was added. Then there’s another pen lift and the stem is redrawn from the bottom.

Thanks Ballroom. At this level of magnification the "P in Paul looks totally unconvincing whether incorrect pen lifts are involved or not. I really cannot believe that REAL considered this set of autographs "likely real".

Absolutely. But this now looks like some sort of - it doesn't even look like a signature or  ink at all. The first vertical of the "u" also appears to show a pen lift at the top. Perhaps an email to confirm that Roger did indeed see these scans? If not, this could all be incorrect and that would explain much.

Hello all, I sent Roger an email and the comparison pics of the stamped signatures. He just got back to me and here is his response.

Thank you

I have contacted them to remove it

It was my fear when they sent me the image that it might be a copy but they confirmed the ink was live but it’s not.”

That’s great. Pre-bidding just ended this morning. I contacted the auction house and they seemed confident that it’s live ink.

Yes it’s likely live ink because someone traced the indented impressions using a wide tip pen to hide a bit of the mess.

It seems like it would have to have been entirely done by tracing the impressions. Again, Paul’s underline is completely missing, and there’s no discernible underlying ink in spots where the signatures diverge.
