This is the third time in the past few months that I have contacted Heritage Auctions for having a fake Mantle DiMaggio Williams signed photo listed. I was told, once again, that they put up the item and then verify the signatures. What a joke! I was told last week that item #40120 would be checked. Well, a week later, it has bids and is still up. The Mantle is the typical forgery that we have come to know. I absolutely cannot trust this auction company and would advise potential customers to do their due diligence before placing a bid on any of their items.

Check it out yourself and other Mantle items they currently have, many are fake.

I fully agree it's an awful way to do business and really compromises reputation. If I ran a garage and said all cars get a 150 point check and are all certified by a mechanic and yet then put unchecked cars on the forecourt that get purchased then I might as well just not make any claims in the first place. Surely Heritage should delay an item listing or the auction if they cannot get it pre-cetified.

Agreed!

Over the years I have purchased a few items through Heritage Auctions. Autographed books with third party COA and such. Who is the ultimate authority on autographs, and how do I go about contacting them.

There is no ultimate authority. Who are the signers?

I have a couple of books signed by Ray Bradbury, one signed by George Carlin and one signed by Dave Berry. The Carlin and Berry books are leather bound limited edition books. The Ray Bradbury books are signed, with one having a very personalized note and picture drawn by Bradbury.

Nice job, Steve, to bring that to their attention.

Just chiming in - I've brought some fake autos to their attention before and they have always been pulled. While the whole putting it up before it's checked is questionable they do, or have in my cases, always done the right thing which is pretty commendable since we see other major auction houses that don't
