Am I correct in thinking that these "special" editions are just regular hardcovers with the "signature" added. They are not numbered? There is no slipcase or anything.

This is unusual, is it not - for a publisher to arrange for an author to sign an unspecified amount of books and charge 20 or 30 times the retail price without adding any of these attributes (numbering etc), I can't recall a UK publisher ever having done this.

If there had been a designated limited edition then certainly Dylan himself would have known about it just as Paul McCartney had to know about the limited edition Lyrics book. Both would have had to give their approval to the proposal and agree to put in a shift signing the books. Completely different thing in this case.

To me, this is sounding more and more like an absolute scam, something dreamt up by someone in marketing or similar.

And because there actually isn't any stated limitation with this book, imagine what might have happened had the books not attracted all this fuss - they could have just kept selling hundreds and hundreds more.

This can't just be a series of unfortunate events

I agree but I cannot get my head around the suspicion that Dylan must have conspired in all this. Looking for scenarios which exclude his participation,

Just wanted to update all of you. I received an email from Jonathan Karp at Simon and Schuster after making him aware my firm along w attorney Steven Blau (and perhaps others) were planning to file a suit in the Southern District of NY Federal Court based on the alleged issue of Autopen usage on the Modern Philosophy of Song Book by Bob Dylan. Mr. Karp advised me that everyone who ordered the book would be receiving full refunds in the next week. He also stated that purchasers need not do anything to receive the refund and asked for patience as they process everything this week. He also stated everyone can keep the autopen copy they received as well and they would not be required to return it. Obviously the pressure they received from all of us made a difference. I am glad that everyone will be getting a refund.
