Here is a photograph (glossy) that I may want to remove the personalized name inscription.  How would I go about doing this?  Also, would it retract the value/historical value of the piece as a whole?

I don't mind inscriptions.  I believe that they add to the historic appeal of the piece.  Imagine that you had a letter written by Charles Dickens.  Would you remove the person's name that it was written to?  The more writing on a piece the better as far as I'm concerned.  I would also be nervous about damaging the photo and believe that the value may be decreased since the original piece would in fact have been altered.
