..Macca was at his office in London today. I asked his PA/ driver (Jon Hammel) if he would sign for me, and he said he wasn't sure because they were running late and it depended a bit on the item. I had the new biography by Paul du Noyer, I was the only one there, but Paul wouldn't sign for me unfortunately. But he was polite enough, smiled, was pleased to hear I enjoyed his concert at the 02 and got in the car.

Don't care how great his music is, if someone did that to me I would no longer be a fan.

To be fair here, he doesn't, to my knowledge, sign autographs now so its not unexpected really and at least he wasn't rude about it. I'd just write it off as a non-success and move on.

When did Paul stop signing autographs?   Did he make a grand "peace and love" announcement like Ringo that I missed?

I'm sure he made an announcement that he was no longer going to sign autographs.

Sorry to hear about McCartney.

A lot of celebrities seem to do this no autograph approach. Cosby only takes pictures with you, Ringo doesn't sign at all, etc.

I understand they don't feel comfortable with people selling their autographs, but at the end of the day it is sold to a fan.  The more they sign the less their autograph is worth, so this no autograph approach makes the dealers hound them even more. Sign 1 item per person if the time allows.  Especially if it is for a clear fan like you seem to be.

I know that some celebrities are concerned about the resale of their autographs, and I have heard that Paul is particularly bothered by eBay.

However, I read a story that noted that Michael Jackson was just the opposite. One man, who said that at the time he down on his luck, I believe in the early 90s, and he would wait outside of one of MJ's offices or studios. So there was a time when he had about 30 MJ albums with him and waited for Michael. When MJ came out, the man asked him if he would sign all the albums for him. He told Michael that he was out of work and had kids to support and rent to pay, and asked if Michael would sign the albums so the man could sell them for income. The man said Michael signed every one for him. And then Michael told the man that if he needed to, he would do it for him again. He said Michael was just a very kind person.

Now that's what I would like to hear of Paul instead of his concern that we "commoners" might "cash in" on his signature.

Having said that though, I do believe there is such a thing as proper autograph-request "etiquette", such as perhaps when they are enjoying dinner with their family, for example.
I don't want to come down too hard on Paul. Maybe after having signed autographs for decades, he has finally reached a point in his life where he wants to be able to just go out in public and not have to worry anymore about being interrupted - to have somewhat of a "normal" life now that he is in his mid-seventies. He certainly is an international treasure whose talents have enriched the lives of millions.

Ringo signed in Boston a few months ago. Basically he sells his artwork at many of the places he plays at. Its for his charity and if you buy his artwork he will sign and photo with you.

Or you could buy his drum kit for $2 million and his White album for $875,000

Wait, Ringo signed last year? I thought Ringo didn't sign anything except stuff for charity?
Maybe he doesn't like the book? Interesting you saw Paul on the anniversary of John's death. Was this at his office in Soho Square?

yes, it was there. I think that he is still signing, but he is just much more selective. It depends on where he is and what he's doing, and the item. I suspect Beatles LP's etc are the least likely item he will sign.  I've been lucky enough to have seen him a number of times over many years (but he doesn't know or recognise me !), and he has signed a few items (even last year), and he has always been very polite and courteous to me and other people.

Paul's stepson attended Rollins College here and he even rented or bought a place near this college so he'd have a place to stay while visiting and there were several encounters with Paul by people here and to my knowledge he didn't sign or take pictures with anyone. The college put on a small teaching seminar with Paul for a select few who won tickets via lottery and the same scenario happened at this so it is very likely he has stopped signing. If Paul had signed it would have been news and the local graphers here would have swarmed the college area looking to get lucky. I do know as recently as two years ago he did sign one a piece for anyone lucky to wait for him at his hotel after he did a show here but that was then.
