I recently won this item on Julien's Auction and would like to get some opinions on the signature. I believe the signature is genuine, but of course I would like to read some of your opinions. What do you think? This was originally owned by Michael's personal physician, Dr. Steven Hoefflin. Judging from the release date of the newspaper and the signature style, I believe this might have been signed around 1984.
Thank you all for your help,
Big Saturn Comics
Thanks. My position remains the same for now. I'd just avoid - too much "mess". YMMV. And that may be good.
Just some dude,
Based on my knowledge and experience with Julien's Auctions and the owner, Darren Julien, Julien's is the only major auction house in the world that I would recommend never, ever doing business with.
This 226 page discussion on their Tompkins & Bush Michael Jackson sale is well worth reading: https://live.autographmagazine.com/forum/topics/michael-jackson-sig...
In spite of that, I have no doubt that this Michael Jackson is absolutely real.
Agree to disagree, Steve.
I trust my own eyes.
As a fan of the man, its not a sig I would buy or be comfortable selling to someone else.
I hear what you are saying, Steve and certainly respect your position which I assume is based on a matter of principle. I applaud you for this. That being said, I look forward to Juliens Auctions despite being burned twice (a Michael Jackson and an Elvis). I have had much better luck when doing my homework well in advance of the auction, often acquiring input from this group or relying upon accompanying LOA’s from reputable authenticators.
I also like having access to many items of a very unique history. That being said, they are very far from being customer centric.
Just out of curiousity, what are your thoughts on one of Juliens competitors, Joe Maddalena and Profiles in History?
Sometimes we forget that what matters is getting the autograph right, not being right. Most of us are wrong our share of the time, and there's not one iota of shame in that. This is one of those situations where I think some are more invested in wanting to be right than considering that it's possible that they may not be.
It's also very important to remember that everyone is different, an individual. Some say that a doctor would never ask a patient to sign autographs for him, which makes the autograph in the OP all but impossible. Or that they wouldn't have had MJ sign a newspaper.
That might be true of some doctors, but how can you say there's no way it could have happened? Look what Larry Nassar did at Michigan State.
Again, I say - it is not one I, personally, would buy or sell.
I find it interesting that you find it absolutely authentic. Wouldnt that imply having seen it signed in person?
By my count, there are at least as many in this thread that dont think its real as do. That would be far from absolute certainty to most, but not to you I guess?
All are free to their own opinions and to trust their own eyes. No need for passive aggressive comments.
I’ll keep my opinions to myself from now on, thanks!
Many of us in various threads, myself included, have said a particular autograph is “absolutely authentic” or “100% real,” or “it’s a no-doubter” when he or she is absolutely convinced that the autograph of topic is authentic even though he or she didn’t actually see it signed. I have said that about several autographs I’m certain of, as have many others. I don’t think you necessarily have to have witnessed the signing to be thoroughly convinced. And I do feel very strongly that the OP is authentic.
I thought it was A-OK to have differing opinions?
Or is that just until you decide that you're right? Lol
Differing opinions are certainly okay. It’s definitely not an exact science. And people can disagree just as many doctors, lawyers, and scientists, and other highly-competent people do. Though I disagree with your opinion, I respect it. I really do, and I hope you don’t think otherwise.
Thanks, James. A few threads back I started using the verbage of not one I would buy or sell personally, in lieu of calling it fake - I cant say its 100% fake any more than you or anyone else can say 100% real.
Im not responding to anything else on this thread.
Ive said my piece and stand by my own opinions.
Peace. OUT!
Different opinions are OK and welcome.
