Doesn't surprise me in the least.

The Petty estate, to me, sounds like they're reaching. Unless there's some kind of report they made about stolen goods.

A buddy of mine owns a company that sells guitars of famous musicians. He was sued by the Hendrix estate twice (he won both times).

There are two sides to every story.

This is where the family screwed up -- they jumped the gun on a bunch of accusations. You don't put out a statement like that (ESPECIALLY in all-caps) against an auction house that has, far as I'm aware, a sterling reputation when it comes to responding to concerns/taking down suspect listings.

It looks shockingly inept for Petty's representatives.

True, the family may have acted hastily, but who can blame them? The waiting is the hardest part.  :)

DING DING DING!!! Winner! Best comment of the thread

It should go without saying, but RR Auction is never going to knowingly offer (and heavily promote) items of questionable sourcing. It makes no sense.

What does make sense is disputes among the family and friends of Tom Petty about who has the rights to certain items. In other social media posts, some people claim Petty's daughter behaves as if anything ever owned by her father now belongs to her and this is a pattern.

As a Tom Petty fan, it's disappointing to see this.

How can you 'aggressively investigate??',  very weird wording there

Seems like a typical response from legal counsel. You aggressively investigate by obtaining additional statements, affidavits, witnesses and/or documents that can demonstrate the consignor had lawful ownership of the items.

It's all about the Benjamins! I read the same thing about Petty's daughter.

Statement from RR Auction:

"JOINT STATEMENT OF TOM PETTY FAMILY & RR AUCTION

RR Auction and the family of the late Tom Petty announce that all concerns regarding the recent offering of personal clothing and items of the rock star have been resolved without litigation.

The Petty family is grateful that RR Auction facilitated the safe return of the items, which have been returned to the Petty family's secure archives, and there is currently no belief RR Auction committed or knew of any wrongdoing regarding the disputed ownership of the items.

To show their gratitude, the family has agreed to a select few of the belongings to be offered for auction through RR Auction. The family supports the upcoming sale and verifies the authenticity of the items to be offered."
