Jerry Lewis, pseudonym of Joseph Levitch (Newark, March 16, 1926 – Las Vegas, August 20, 2017), was an American comedian, actor, director, screenwriter, film producer and singer, as well as author, producer and television host, and philanthropist. Russian. Among the most important and well-known American comedians, he formed a highly successful artistic partnership in television and cinema with Dean Martin, before embarking on a solo career as an actor and director starting in the 1960s. He has made an original and eclectic contribution to cinema, creating a comic mask forged on a characteristic facial expression, combined with body gestures and an exuberance of completely new gags, accompanied by often surreal and biting texts and screenplays. His humanitarian commitment was strong: in 1966 he founded Telethon, a famous television marathon organized all over the world with the aim of raising funds to fight muscular dystrophy. In 1999 he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival
