Battle of the Experts: Grad vs Epperson; Who's the Better Authenticator?

Hi,

I was wondering who I should ask for a quick opinion in deciphering if a signature is authentic or not.  So, here is my choices, Steve Grad of Beckett Authentications or Roger Epperson of JSA Spence.  Who's better for rock signatures?

For music it’s Epperson 100 out of 100 times.

I sent BAS a signature review it came back unlikely to pass “I obtained in person” resent a day later they passed it. Very inconsistent if you ask me being so new. I only did it to test run the service.

Clever of you to think that Mark, well done!

It happened to me with BAS too, they never pass anything on to the quick opinion. Obviously it is the poorest service of all.

I have had similar experiences with BAS as well. They do seem to give a high percentage of negative responses on quick opinions. Some are fairly obvious genuine examples. I do not recommend using their quick opinion service at all.

I only submit a quick opinion if I am intending to submit an autograph for a full authentication. This, in the end, is causing Bickett to lose revenue. I recommend using the ACOA or Roger Epperson for music related signatures.

Odd thing, I had a Stevie Nicks pass a Bickett quick opinion and submitted it and guess what? It failed! Go figure.

i never used ACOA , i don’t know much about them, but I understand they are a good bunch and I will absolutely give them a try

Because they want you to buy their full authentication service, it costs more.

Epperson actually looks at the stuff. I would doubt Grad does the quick opinions.

Thanks Ian.

Ian,

That’s exactly why I like Roger on music , I used his QO on items , he is responsive and if you send him something to review in person, his turnaround is very fast

I never had a bad experience with him

Steve Grad on Pawn Stars couldn't even ID correctly a Randy Savage ring worn item. It was a mid 1990s WCW version that he ID'd as a 1980s Mega Powers. With that, you can easily look to TV or photos to ID. Autographs is even tougher. So by default and of course based on everything positive I've read on this site: Roger is the clear winner.

Its actually a no brainer for me....Roger would win hands down, his knowledge is of a very, very high standard.
