I get not wanting to buy a bad example of an autograph at all, but isn't this is essentially a freebie with a CD/vinyl purchase? Not as exciting as a higher quality signature for sure, but still another case of "how mad can you be?" given the situation.

Its up front and its essentially free.

"a fool and his money are soon parted

You guys who hate this offering are just beating a dead horse.

And calling people who chose to purchase it "a fool" is unwarranted.

Paying the list price of a CD (and some sellers sold it for less) that comes with a free "initial" on a separate card is not unreasonable at all for fans of his music.

I see people post on here all the time about spending hundreds of dollars for living celebrities that I wouldn't pay $10 for, but to each their own.  And many of those "autographs" are no better than Elton's initials.

I'm not interested in paying hundreds of dollars for full EJ signature on the secondary market, but I'll happily buy a CD at list price (or less) and get an initial that I know is his.

Others can do as they see fit, but there is no reason to attack or demean people.

Well said! I'm right there with you.

Agree with JK and was going to say something yesterday. After someone else posted that they were very happy about what they got someone decided to stomp on their 'Good Times' which I thought was very childish. We know certain people on here are not happy about this release. But getting 14 messages a day in my inbox beating a dead horse and ignoring the people who are happy with this is way over the line. Time to let this one go already.

I’m guessing that there are many more like me who only buy for the signed part and don’t even own a cd player, but with this one I applaud them for being honest and letting us know what we were buying ahead of time so we had a choice.

I do think Jimmy James is being tough with the attacks, and yes, we are beating a dead horse. For me, the reason I'm beating this dead horse is -- I just can't wrap my mind around it, that's all.

So when I think of a new way to bring it up, I do. For example, reading the last few posts I thought of this -- what if Ringo Starr was selling his new CD "autographed" but he -- who went from signing his full name back in the Beatles days, to his first name with a star under it, to just his first name, thought to himself -- Elton did an E, I could do an "R" but then thought even further and said "It would be even quicker for me to "sign" thousands, if I just made a dot. One dot on the CD cover, to represent the dot in the second letter of "Ringo". Would people buy a dot on a CD knowing that Ringo put that dot there?

Okay, I'm done beating the dead horse.

I usually focus on historical autographs and there are lots of desirable letters and documents signed with just one or a few initials.  It's just a matter of whether or not they are identifiable or authenticatable.

Selling a single dot as a signature of any kind is an absurd proposition.  Let someone try it and we'll see how popular it is.

In any case, there are plenty of squiggles and unidentifiable scrawls that people happily buy.  And didn't Billie Eilish sell a limited edition CD with only some paint drops on the cover?  And many of those types of things were sold at a premium.

I'll continue in this way. Just remember how people felt about Lady gaga 5 years ago.. fastforward to today and the backlash worked. She signed her latest release with a full buleautiful signature.. If we all were as accepting of gaga back then as some here are of Elton now, nothing would have came from it.. Enjoy your mediocre E because its all you will ever get. Glad I have a few full elton signatures in my collection because if I was new to this hobby, I'd be even more pissed. Thank God like Joel said that they at least gave us a heads up even though it was based on false pretenses, using eyesight as an excuse. Everyone who lays down and accepts releases like this are hurting the hobby I have loved for over 30 years.. I believe thats good enough reason to be upset and continue on.

Never forget gaga

A couple years ago, I made the terrible mistake of trading a $250 autograph (authentic Bruce Springsteen signature cut from the Obama and Springsteen Renegades book) for what turned out to be a forgery of Elton John’s full signature. I am usually very careful before doing such trades and I even had a bad feeling about the whole thing but unfortunately I still went through with it. Once the trade was complete, a few months later I decided to send the signature into Beckett for authentication. It came back as not authentic so I then had a few collectors look at it and they all agreed it was a forgery. I was unable to reverse the trade or get any compensation for it. The trader refused to respond to any further emails after I sent the autograph to Beckett. I even got the police involved but the trader just simply ignored all emails sent so I gave up. I was out $250 (plus authentication fees) and all I got was a forged signature.

When I found out Elton John was offering these CDs with his initials for the price of the CD plus shipping, I originally wasn’t going to buy one because I was still angry about the mistake I made doing that trade. I then changed my mind and decided to buy one since it’s something he actually still touched and “signed” and even if it’s not his full signature, it’s something. So now I have an Elton John signed CD and I am happy with it since I know it’s at least authentic.
