I've read a bunch of pages of debate here. I'm in London where a number of stores had signed copies. I picked one up from a small independent in a seaside town. How is that possible? To satisfy UK and US market she'd have to sign thousands. And yes, they all looked the same. I've formally asked the UK publisher to confirm. But I'm just reading wish fulfillment here. We must, surely, accept that we've been done wrong by the publishers. Cheated and been misled. What we're seeing is just not possible. Where do we go from here?
That’s a good question Gareth, one I’ve actually been thinking about today.
As for this specific Liza mess, I’ve been so busy that I haven’t even started the return on my own Liza book yet. My understanding is that we have 30 days with Barnes & Noble, and I think other retailers have similar policies. But I’m curious if anyone has run into any roadblocks with returns.
I also don’t expect the publisher or Liza’s team to be in any hurry to acknowledge anything, so a refund may be about as resolved as it’s going to get. I do hope that the point has been made….we are aware of how far they went with this one, and maybe that gives them pause next time. I think we need media attention to drive that point home.
I have shelves full of these signed books, and I don’t doubt that the vast majority are genuine. I’m trying not to toss out the good with the bad so to speak.
That said, I picked up the Michael Douglas book the other day before thinking better of it, but passed on the Christopher Lloyd book (which normally I would have bought).
I think the dust needs to settle a bit before I feel comfortable moving forward with collecting these again, especially when we’re talking about people of advanced age who are supposedly mass-signing thousands of copies. It does make me wonder whether some books we already own might have involved this kind of technology or better, and got by us.
Also Gareth and anyone else landing on this thread- I just want to make sure you know about the specific Autopen thread created for the Liza books:
You’re welcome to post in either, but you might be interested in this if you haven’t read through it:

This is what Liza herself said. In a September 2025 Instagram post, Minnelli stated, "I'm already starting to sign, and for the uninformed, I don't use auto-pen"...
So are you switiching your stance michelle
and now not returning yours?
and now opining that the Liza's are legit?
JJ
nope. am returning mine. there is something fishy going on imo. how can so many sigs be peachy perfect all signed by an 80 year old? it was also quite difficult to get waterstones online agree to a refund bearing in mind they say the books are handsigned by her and not by a secretary etc
FWIW (very little), both Art Carney's (b. 1918) and Joyce Randolph's (b. 1924) signature started to deteriorate after age 80 or so. Carney's became simplified but the same, and Randolph's became "messier" and larger, but still an attempt at the same form. By 2010 very hectic in execution.
I don't think these are real, but I'd choose to believe that Liza doesn't know this has been done. Having said that, I just watched her on her own documentary vehemently deny that she or anyone around her did drugs at Studio 54. So, you know, pinch of salt.
