Meryl Streep, born Mary Louise Streep (Summit, June 22, 1949), is an American actress. Acclaimed by critics since her debut in the seventies and capable of ranging across different film genres, Meryl Streep is recognized as one of the best actresses in the history of cinema and holds the record for nominations for Oscars in the categories reserved for acting (in her case, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress), amounting to a total of 21 nominations. She won the award three times, once as best supporting actress, for Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and twice as best leading actress, for Sophie's Choice (1982) and for The Iron Lady (2011), thus becoming, together with Ingrid Bergman and Frances McDormand, the second woman with the most acting awards in the history of the Oscars, preceded only by Katharine Hepburn (who won four). She is also the only actress to have been nominated for an Oscar for films produced in five different decades (the seventies, eighties, nineties, two thousand and two thousand and ten) and one of only seven performers (along with Helen Hayes, Ingrid Bergman, Maggie Smith, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett and Renée Zellweger) who won the Oscar for both best actress and best supporting actress. She holds the record of 31 Golden Globe nominations, and 9 wins (including one for her career). She received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2004, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2011, and the Golden Globe Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 for her contributions to American culture through the performing arts.
