Hello all,

I just recently found this site and have been delighted so far as I look to get into autograph collecting!  I was wondering if anyone could please give their opinion on this Macca signed Hofner bass.  It comes with a full LOA from James Spence.  Much appreciated.

nope but if your a true in person person  u might understand it .very few will but it was a big trick that work starting mid 90's.

and still works great today.

Hiding the pickguard's edges so the artist thinks they're signing paper?

kinda close

but  more elborate .

it envolves a framer and other stuff but works great

Hiddens are effective, but less and less so. Most legends I can think of are aware of them as of about a decade ago.

Sometimes they rip them apart when you present the mat. Then they snap the pickguard in half and throw it at you while screaming in anger.

Or maybe that's just certain bluesmen.

Conversations amongst graphers typically go like this:

Grapher 1: I want him on some guards.
Grapher 2. He doesn't do them.
Grapher 1: I'll box 'em up.
Grapher 2: Nah, he knows.
Grapher 1: *disappointed*

I like Steve's idea better.

Waterboarding! It's proven to be effective and will be until the end of time.

Attached is an example of the guitarist for the Beastie Boys (Ad-Rock) signing a load of Strat pickguards for one of the Autograph Pros staff members. I've been witnessed this happening for almost 20 years straight.

I my humble opinion these pickguards are a massive yawn even if real. The photo of the Beastie Boy signing a whole load just for a dealer to sell on is an absolute turn-off.

I wouldn't even want a signed guitar body (or any other instrument for that matter) unless the instrument was actually used by the signer. Otherwise it is really no better than a signed piece of paper. You could say it makes more of a statement but I would see it more as a hard-to-display dust trap.

Eva, please get some signed guitar bodies and then sell them to me for the price of a signed piece of paper. Deal!

Agreed. It is a grab, like certain 11x14 photos just produced because of the size, grainy cropped quality be damned. Evidence of this is the cheapo guitars being "signed". Right handed bass for Paul? What is the attraction there? Other evidence? Some of these guards are not even the right shape.

No offense to a pug called eva but that is retarded!

I will leave others to take a view on your choice of words Richard, but I was just expressing my opinion on signed objects that the signer has no direct connection with. I can see why an instrument signed by a musician would most likely be worth more than a signed piece of paper to most people (more "eye appeal" etc.) but if it isn't an instrument that he or she has actually played it isn't worth more to me personally. For me, it is like an actor or actress signing a copy script, film can, clapperboard or movie poster relating to a movie he or she doesn't appear in.

People like different things. There is an old collector in NYC who collects everyone, no matter who, on tiny bowling pins.

I think that is uniquely personal, and awesome.

As for what sellers choose to get signed, they will follow the money.
