I'm sure this topic has been raised before but do members think we need so many discussion categories? At the moment there are 27 and many rarely get used.

I can see the sense of having more than one category ("wood for the trees" etc.) but the problems I see with having so many is:

1. People may be unsure where to post (e.g. Beatles' items are often posted in the more general authenticity category or even the town square or music category).

2. People may miss posts that would interest them (and therefore not be able to provide valuable feedback) because things are posted in a category that they don't look at regularly.

I would suggest

1. A "cull" of categories that have had less than 5 posts a month over the last 6 months.

2. Removal of the general categories "music" and "entertainment".

Thoughts?

I would concur w/ Eva's suggestions. As an actvie member here for over 2 years, I still have questions every once in a while as to where to best post a topic. Thinning out inactive or overly general forums might streamline things a little.

Roger waters. Michael jackson

Paul, Michael Jackson gets used all the time, and you know it.  You’ve made it obvious with some of your posts that you don’t care for MJ, but plenty of members here do.

These are good points. I'm adding forum categories for major areas, and will be putting out a map on where you can look for things or post.

I just deleted the signed book category and everything moved to Town Square for now. Signed books will go into the author's category: Sports, Entertainment, Literature if they're primarily known as an author, etc.

Same with Art: Ronnie Wood will go into Rolling Stones, Mick Fleetwood into Fleetwood Mac if we give the band its own forum category.

"Is this autograph real" will be the general place members can post authenticity discussions, then another moderator or I will move them to the right category. That way everything will be in the logical place to search for it.

Artists who were part of one major band before going off on their own will go with the band unless it doesn't make sense. Roger Waters will go in Pink Floyd, Freddy Mercury in Queen, McCartney in Beatles, etc.

I'm about to ask for a some members to help with that because we have so much to do and it needs to be done quickly. We're finally moving to a new, more advanced platform in the next couple of months. I wanted to move to it in early 2018, but it was much slower than this one, so I held off. Now they say the speed will be dramatically increased within the next month or so, so the build-out is in process. We need to clean up the forum categories before we move.

Just don’t remove the Star Wars category, please.  I was actually thinking about this consideration while browsing through the many groups yesterday.  That could use a cleansing as well.

Yes, definitely keep Star Wars!

As a huge Prince fan, I hate to even mention the possibility of its removal.  Although the Prince forum doesn’t get used a lot, the reason is pretty obvious.  Authentic Prince autographs are just so hard to come by.  Some were popping up right after he died, but then the real ones were quickly picked up...and kept by collectors.  Right now, I think there are only two real ones on eBay, and they’re priced very high.

Hi Mike,

Don't worry...Star Wars will not be removed! It's model of what we need to do. Categories are being expanded dramatically as we prepare to move to the new community platform once its speed it up to snuff.

I agree there could be some consolidation of discussion groups here. The biggest issue I have is in the search function and getting the best possible results including being able to sort the search results. For instance, most recent first.

Maybe there could be a way to have sign up alerts? For instance, whenever a discussion is started concerning Madonna, members can sign up to receive an email on those Madonna specific discussions. Just a thought.

I think that’s a great idea, Joe, if it could be done.

Actually, yes Joe. Just go to the forum you want and you can click a button at the bottom to follow it. You’ll be notified of all discussions and posts.

Maybe, I'm still not being clear of misunderstanding this myself. Let me continue with my Madonna example. Someone can post about her in a number of different forums. What is I want to key off "Madonna" and get a message whenever it's about Madonna no matter where is posted.

Sometimes my words to not come out as clear as my brain thinks it!

No, Joe, I'm expecting you to be a mind-reader. The most popular subjects will get their own forums, and everything about just them or where they're the major subject of a discussion will go there.

Madonna will have her own forum.

We'll move everything to them. I'm just about done moving the Beatles:
