This has more to do with the centralization of the publishing industry/failure on booksellers to have adequate inventory control on their online storefronts than anything else.

These days, when I order something online, it's a crapshoot as to whether I actually get it, either because every storefront listed the item in question at the same date/time without ensuring they had the product in hand to begin with, overselling, and/or not updating the listing(s) when they go OOS.

Agreed, can't count how many times I found a little gem online only for my order to be cancelled. Worst offenders are limited edition pre orders and "not in stock, delivery within 7-10 days" . That normally means you'll never get it.

Amazon UK just sent word they will not be getting these and cancelled the order.

Amazon just cancelled my order

Mine too. What a surprise.

Hive just refunded my payment so assuming a cancellation there

Hive has just confirmed that the book was not available for them to sell and all orders are cancelled.

WHSmith just cancelled

We are writing to you regarding your recent order, for Paul McCartney's "1964 eyes of the storm - Signed edition".

The range of books available to purchase on our site is managed via an automated feed from a third party and we have just been advised by the publisher that this book was included in error. As soon as we were alerted to this issue the book was removed from sale.

As a result, we are unable to fulfil your order for this book. Please be assured your payment for your order will be refunded in full.  We understand you will be disappointed but hope you can appreciate that there is limited availability of this publication.

Please accept our sincere apologies.  Please do not reply to this automated email, as this inbox is not monitored.

That's Just gross Incompetence by them all - especially with such an Expensive item!

"The range of books available to purchase on our site is managed via an automated feed from a third party and we have just been advised by the publisher that this book was included in error."

So basically, the backend of the online storefront is hot garbage, they deliberately cheaped out by outsourcing their inventory processes to the lowest bidder, and this kind of thing has been happening constantly.

Instead of apologizing for it, WHSmith should be asking themselves why this happened to begin with, why it still happens often, and how to stop it completely.

Sending you that note from an unmonitored email is the cherry on the sundae.

Wonder why Penguin UK had a product page (now removed) for the signed edition, linking to WHSmiths and Hive among others?

Amazon and smiths cancelled , just happy I got a confirmed order at the national gallery , rang and confirmed order will be fulfilled .
