Effective today, 11 more states are requiring the collection of internet sales taxes bringing the total to 34 states that require this.  My sister was kind of happy about it because she works in retail and thinks it might help sales in her store.  However, we live in Kansas, and Kansas is still one of 16 states not requiring us to pay sales tax for purchases on eBay

This certainly isn’t going to help ebay sales in general.  If you are a seller listing a $1000 item, that item for most buyers just became a $1080 item if the sales tax is 8%.  This is probably not a good thing for people selling high-priced autographs.

Look at it as a buyer's fee. The only difference is the government is getting in on the action. I'm shocked it took them this long.

Sales on eBay is a fraction of what it used to be. It's easier to sell forgeries on their site than it is to sell authentic material. It used to be a good place to sell and that is no longer the situation.

As for me, time has come to probably get out of the game. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. When it quits being fun it's time to get out.

Agreed, Joe. The last 6-9 months have been absolutely abyssmal as far as Ebay is concerned.

A good friend of mine who is a stay at home parent got a letter from the IRS not long ago stating thousands of dollars due in back taxes over Ebay sales.

They are doing this to small fries, meanwhile the corps. and the like get more and more advantages. Our taxed nickels and dimes and dollars only go to make the rich richer.

This is sad. The little guy cant even afford to play the game anymore, much less compete.

Sign O’ the Times

:(

I got hit twice with taxes  .and it will now determine what I buy on ebay

I buy next to nothing now from E bay sellers in the US the global shipping makes it way too expensive they charge import fees even on items that don't actually have import fees most of the sellers don't even realise e bay are adding the fees onto their buyers invoices they are oblivious to it ,a lot of sellers slip into joining the global shipping programme without even really knowing it

I don’t sell very often, but I’ve also heard from the seller’s point of view, shipping overseas can get very costly and complicated for the seller IF the buyer decides he/she wants to return the item because eBay then is of no help to the seller.

it was the fact that overseas buyers were ripping of ssellers in the usa. and ebays globlal shipping protects us that's why I use them .I rather lose the sale than a 1000$ itiem

The last lp i bought from America i had a 54 dollar import charge. And postage was 35 dollars. So i feel your pain

It puts me off buying stuff from America i mostly try to get stuff from just england now. You can find some good deals in the uk. I bought a signed 1984 monsters of rock ticket by ozzy for 11.50. And an autobiography for 14 with the bookplate special edition.

I agree with you.  If I were going to sell to someone overseas, I would use the global shipping program for its protection, and the fact I wouldn’t know how to deal with customs duties...too complicated.  I had someone from the UK wanting me to sell to him without the GSP.  I think I firgured out that there was the potential for me to lose my ass basically so I didn’t.

BTW, I mean no disrespect to my friends in the UK!  I love the mother country!  :0)

He was just trying to get out of the import charge probably. Ive ask a few people to do the same. When i sell stuff to the states. I alway tell the post office the value is way under what i sold it for because i think they whack a fee on the buyer

Im from England and most of my sales are to the U.S. English people dont tend to buy much iv found. I dont sell that often either only when i have doubles of someone, and i dont really need 2 of the same person, i keep telling myself that so i stop buying aha

In New York State we got whacked with the ebay sales tax a few months ago. Just happens my first purchase after that was a fairly pricey item...   I forgot about the tax and was surprised when I saw the $80+ tax added on. Ugh. So much for the ebay bucks that I earned on that purchase -- it ended up being a wash.

For this reason, I am much more hesitant to pull the trigger and wait for a promotion or hope the seller will take a lower offer.
