James Stewart - suspected forgery style alert

Over the past few months I have noted an explosion of this James Stewart signature style on eBay. It seems as if some sellers have an endless supply of these signatures and they all have the same unusual characteristics.

  • A sharp, "jerky" appearance
  • Letters smashed together with poor letter definition
  • Odd spacing between letters
  • Never personalized
  • Many of them do not appear to be on glossy photos... they are on cardstock prints

I…

Operation Bullpen and the Marino Family Forgery Ring: Has anything changed?

Over the past few days I have been re-reading Operation Bullpen, the story of the Marino Family Forgery Ring and how the FBI took them down. The last time I read it was several years ago.

Something that really struck me this time around was how self-conscious the ring was about their product being “high quality” and how nervous they got when “someone…

Signature Authentication/Forgery defrauder

Greetings.  My name is Kelly Wilkins. I am a forensic document examiner/handwriting analyst/expert and an avid collector of autographs, myself.  But, I go to horror movie conventions to meet my "heroes", and it dawned on me.  Now that I am certified, why not use this for my benefit.  I have met with managers and the actors themselves as well as other avid collectors and have started to add signature authentication to my services.  Now, this is why I am contacting you. Since this is a subject…

  1. March 3, 1939 Authentically signed by Truman as Senator
  2. May 2, 1940 proxy signed letter "Harry S. T. by BWT" unquestionably signed for the Senator by his wife and future first lady Bess…

Robert Edwards Auctions/Rob Lifson thanks third party authenticators.

Note To Autograph Authenticators: Thanks!

Published by Robert Lifson on Tagged Uncategorized

REA would like to take the time to express a special thanks to all the authenticators who have contributed to uncovering often ingenious and complicated fraud, and in the process protecting consumers. It’s a thankless job and these guys are often literally on the firing lines of retribution by those whose interests they cross. It is a given that these same authenticators sometimes make… Continue

Beatles-Signed Abbey Road Albums: What's Real? What's Fake?

Sometimes you just have enough. Brian Waring, a collector from Colorado, was one such fellow. He tried to sell a Beatles-signed Abbey Road and a Stones-signed Sticky Fingers album on eBay, but his listings were kicked-off because they thought they were forgeries. He was sure eBay was wrong—he paid tens of thousands of dollars for them from…
