stage costumes??

I was wondering if people thought buying stage costumes belonging to musicians /actors was a good idea or not? Going off targett there are no autographs involved!! If anyone has purchased an item belonging to an actor /pop star etc what did they buy?

I have a stage worn shirt of Stevie Ray Vaughan, many stage worn items from Elton John, including his glasses, a shirt, tie and pyjama bottoms from Elvis Presley and a stage worn jacket given to me by B.B. King! Very valuable items indeed!

I think before I would do this I would want to study things very carefully. Costumes might be OK if you can prove the provenance of them and they have proper tags, etc. The problem as I see it would be proving it. As far as props there is a huge industry on eBay of people raiding thrift shops for cheap junk and passing it via fake prop company certificates. They usually say "used on the set" but might not show on screen. Many use "Ellis Prop Company" fake COA's. This company did sell a few things but mainly armor related items. Most of the prop sellers on there no longer put an image of the Ellis Prop company up since it has been proven fake they just say they have a COA. I have seen a few classic costumes on eBay that look legitimate with the right "Universal" or "Paramount" tags sewn in and the photographs from films match the item. I suspect these are fine. I just would want to know everything about how studio prop departments handled such things. So knowing there are tons of fake props out there I think education is the key to any collecting. Also textiles are notoriously difficult to properly store and if there is silk involved that will degrade over time. I question the long term survival of "framed" clothing also. Not trying to discourage people but I do think were I so inclined I would try to find a good collector with knowledge. Having said all that I hope people will post of the things they do have.

I agree with what you say scott altho some of the things Richard has are amazing. I assume Heritage auctions check their stuff for provenance though

I dunno about that house, but I remember something about a Monroe hairdryer and such that was in a big show or sale and it was made after she died. Was it on the QM?

You are certainly right Scott. All my items came direct from the artists to me, or through direct contacts with the artists (in the case of the Elvis items and SRV).
