Now in week 9 of back and forth, trying to resolve a claim on a damaged package delivered to me in the 3rd week of September.

The package was insured. The sender waived his claim, in order for the shipping service to settle with me. Nothing but a run around.

The driver placed the package on the counter and handed me the plastic pen to sign his electronic scanner, and then he rushed for the door. Luckily I picked it up before he got away, heard the jingle of broken glass and stopped him cold.....made him watch me open the box.

His response.....well since you signed for it.....i can't do anything, you will have to file a claim.

....and so started the most insane process I have ever been a part of.

There is no one available in the claims department.

We didn't receive the waiver.

We can't talk to you because you are not the shipper.

There is no manager in the office.

The agent handling your claim is not available.

Please leave a call back number.  (8 straight weeks I have left a call back number.....calls back ....zero)

If you ever find yourself needing to ship a valuable autograph or anything at all...... if you use Fedex, you are begging to be ripped off.

Just another tip from your Uncle Pete.

There is even another reason to not ship expensive collectibles via FedEx...

FedEx will not insure "collectibles" for over a certain amount. I heard that amount is $1,000, but it is not specified on the FedEx website. In other words, they will let you buy as much insurance as you want, but if a collectible goes missing, they'll only cover up to $1,000. I know a collector who was burned by this.

From FedEx website:

18.4     For Shipments containing the following items of extraordinary value the Declared Value for Carriage is also limited and depends on the contents and destination of the Shipment:

-           Antiques or collectable items, or any commodity that exhibits the style or fashion of a past era and whose history, age or rarity contributes to its value. These items include but are not limited to, furniture, tableware, porcelains, ceramics and glassware. Collectable items may be contemporaneous or relating to a past era.

oh dont start me on Fedex either;- altho I am not sure that any of the other  couriers are better either.  Tip - you will spend hours on the phone going around and around and around................................

My "real life" job has me dealing with a good deal of shipping on a daily basis. USPS is not perfect, but I have never had a problem collecting on any claim filed.

They are also the only carrier that when shipping within the USA will cover the value of the item as insured.

Try sending a collector coin or other valuable piece via Fedex or UPS. Both will gladly take your money for insurance, and they will only tell you your item is not covered after something has happened to your package.

This scares me as I always thought FedEx was the best, then UPS, then the USPS! The Post Office is always trying to bend stuff or put holes in things that I receive! I guess I'm lucky that Ive never had to file a claim.

never ship collectibles with fedex only ups .first rule

usps is okay but ups is best and they will insure up to 50k

I am also in process, as a seller, with fedex claim. It's still early in the process but I sent a large framed item that was so well protected nothing should have broken it yet it was so bad that fedex wouldn't even deliver it to the addressee so sent it back to me. The location I shipped it from, of course, wont claim any responsibility to even help in the process and gives the 800 number which isn't the easiest to get through to.

For all the people that claim about the post office, I have sold on ebay for almost 10 years. Very rarely have I had any issues with damage or lost items and when I do-if it's insured-they take care of it with no loss to me. The two times I went out of the usps because I had no choice (the items were too large for them to handle) it was with fedex and ups and both large items got severely damaged.

One other thing that really gets me with FedEx is (in the UK), unlike other carriers, they deliver the parcel happily...then a few days later you get hit with a bill for import! At least with other carriers you can refuse the package knowing the fees before hand, but with FedEx they do the nasty and get you to take it blind of any extra costs you may get hit with.
