I discovered this in an autograph album I recently bought. It's a roster of the American attendees to the 1840 London Antislavery Convention. It includes Lucretia Mott, and Charles Lenox Remond, an…Continue

I have a handwritten scientific paper of Leonhard Euler (hugely influential mathematician of the 18th century). I have shown it to two Euler experts, both of whom said they have no doubt it's…Continue

Leonhard Euler - 18th Century Mathematician - Is this Authentic?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Will McIntosh Apr 17, 2024. 2 Replies

Can anyone weigh in on whether this document is authentic? It is a paper on differential equations, written in Latin and appears to be signed by Euler at the top. The bifolium paper seems correct for…Continue

"I was thinking about the issue of linking this to the 1840 Convention, and I think it's there: one of the signatures on the roster is Joseph Sturge, who was one of the British organizers of the convention. This would indicate the list must…"

"Thanks, JK. I haven't had it authenticated, but I've looked at other examples of the key signatures, and all of them look right. I've identified most of the signers, and all check out as US delegates to the convention: Lucretia Mott,…"

Just found this: American Attendees of the 1840 London Anti-Slavery Convention

I discovered this in an autograph album I recently bought. It's a roster of the American attendees to the 1840 London Antislavery Convention. It includes Lucretia Mott, and Charles Lenox Remond, an important Black antislavery activist, among other notables. What's incredible to me is the historic nature of this particular roster. According to Wikipedia, the hosts of the convention refused to seat the women, and this was one of the events that sparked the women's suffrage movement. I have a…See More

"Hi Steve, So the end of the Leonhard Euler manuscript story is about to play out. It just went up in RR's latest auction, which closes December 11. I'm definitely going to have sweaty palms that night! Many thanks for your advice."

"I'd talk to auction houses first. I don't know the market for Euler material, but if an ALS sells for +/- $10,000 or so, I wouldn't be surprised if a multi-page scientific paper is worth six-figures. Talk to appropriate museums and…"

Just thought I'd post a bit of biographical info. I was a writer for Autograph Collector Magazine back in the 1990s, when it still showed up in your mailbox in print form. I wrote maybe 25 feature articles. That was actually my first pro writing gig, which I did as a hobby when I was a psychology professor. These days I'm a full-time science fiction writer (my member pic is actually the cover of one of my novels). I won a Hugo award a while back, and I've written some young adult and middle…
