Springsteen, Stern, Travolta -- all signed this week

I just typed a long post on this, and for some reason, it didn't show up.

Bruce Springsteen was signing as he left an event. I saw him sign a Born to Run album, which not only is a classic album...lots of white space so the signature would show up nicely.

Howard Stern, who often walks while he signs, is in LA with his wife. She's doing lots of shows promoting her new book on dogs.

And John Travolta, always one of the best signers in…

Ebay for Autographs? Instead, Ebay for Memorabilia to get Autographed.

Ebay as we all know, has its serious limitations when it comes to authentic autographs. However, I as a collector have used Ebay since 1999 as a source of finding some really rare and collectable items as a means of getting such rare goodies and memorabilia signed at a later point in time. Case in point:

Last February Helen Reddy was doing a one day signing in Burbank, Ca. Where else would I have found the 7 Helen Reddy albums that I brought to her to get autographed? Last…

When Athletes Leave the City They Got Famous in

When I was in 6th grade, I wanted to go to this basketball camp that Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were putting on. When my mom told me to call them and find out how much it was -- the $250 made her say "Absolutely not!"

As I got into autographs in the years that followed, I always wondered about athletes that do these sports camps in the city they play in. Some do them in the city they grew up in. Other athletes do golf events or other charity…

A.J. McLean of Back Street Boys

On TMZ last night, their cameras caught former Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean. He was signing a few autographs in the crowd and was asked, "What's the craziest thing you've ever had to sign?" He responded, "One night before one of my shows, I signed 15 condoms."

I just Googled his name and on his website, it says you can buy a VIP ticket at his concert, which gets you into a meet-and-greet with him, one photo, and one item you can get autographed.

It all reminds me…

Rob Zombie Collectables

Rob Zombie, the former metal guru from White Zombie, has seemed to get more into movies (House of 1,000 Corpses, Halloween, etc). I always love reading interviews with him, because he is really into collecting things.

I'm bummed that when I saw him at NAMM in Anaheim years ago, I didn't have him autograph anything.

Anyways...in a Spin Magazine from April, they had him in the "In My Room" segment, where they show a photo of him in a room, and 10 things are listed…

Tiger Woods and Picasso (both seem to like breasts)

I heard that a Pablo Picasso sold for $106 million. Wow. It's such a shame that so many artists die poor, and their paintings make millions after they die. Not that Picasso was one of those artists that was poor, but still.

The expensive item that caught my eye, was when someone that lives near me put some golf clubs of Tiger Woods on eBay, for a minimum bid of $250,000. My first thought was -- yeah, good luck with that.

The irons and wedges were used (according…

Iron Man and MacGruber Autographs

I just saw Iron Man 2, and they have two scenes with autographs being signed. I like that nowdays, when they do a super hero movie, autographs are usually a part of it; because if you think about it, why wouldn't people be asking Superman for his autograph? The guy was huge. Okay, well...not as huge as the Hulk. And, the Hulk probably wasn't a good signer. He got angry a lot, and probably broke a few pens.

(have TMZ on right now, and Hugh Jackman is signing autographs in the…

TV Hosts and Autographs

I saw the sold-out Conan O'Brien show in San Diego, which he cleverly titled the "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour."

San Diegan, and national touring singer, Jason Mraz was the music guest. Not as cool as Pearl Jam in Seattle, but he's had a few big hits (but boy "Remedy" an annoying song).

We didn't ask for his autograph before the show, because we weren't sure it was him. After the show, he gave high fives to the 100 of us waiting near…

Autographs in Film -- The Eclipse

An interesting, small little film.

The main plot involves famous authors going to a book festival. Many of them are asked to sign books during dinners or after speaking engagements.

One funny scene involves the most famous of the authors, who has been shown to be a jerk. He gets tipsy, and is looking for an author he had an affair with. As he stumbles around looking for her, he's asked by three different people to sign things.

Col John W. Ripley: Navy Cross Recipient, Historical autograph

With this 6th in my Valor series of blogs, I wanted to change it up abit. I use Col Ripley here for the great story of how an autograph request can led to something so much bigger. First, a little background as I know many here may not know what The Navy Cross is.

The Navy Cross is the highest medal that can be awarded by the United States Department of the Navy and the second highest award given for valor, only the Medal of Honor ranks…

Historic Pieces of Memorabilia

A cane that JFK used, was just turned into the Smithsonian Institution by a 91-year-old. Not sure why he didn't use it himself.

Red Robinson said he kept the prized piece hidden under his bed. He was a colleague of Kennedy's in the Navy, and this was used while he recovered from a back injury in 1943, due to a military accident.

The injury happened when Kennedy was on the PT 109, that a Japanese destroyer rammed. Kennedy jumped in the water and dragged men back…

REPRINT AUTOGRAPHS: I still do not understand the "why".

I am sending out the white flag to this community. I am calling "uncle", and I will carry the spit buckets, I will chalk the field, and I will mow your lawns, wash your cars, and even consider picking up after your pit bulls (even on feeding day). I just need someone to please explain to me what is this infestation of reprint autographs for sale currently on Ebay. I know we have talked about this before, but do not still understand the "why" as to why anyone would want these, let alone…

Al Pacino, Al Pacino Al Pacino -- Signing Autographs, Throwing Pens

I guess that title is a pit deceptive. It wasn't like Pacino was throwing pens in anger. He was just being funny and having a good time.

On TMZ last night, I saw him in an airport in New York, and he was signing up a storm. One reporter asks him the secret of looking so young and he replies "Keeping quiet."

Anyone that's ever gotten Pacino, knows the autograph is really just a round scribble. But hey -- he's one of the best actors of all-time, and he signs.…
