Carol Channing -- Her Death, and Our Dinner Date

I’ll never forget the day I met legendary entertainer Carol Channing. Oh hell, who am I kidding. I did forget. Yet when I found out she died today, at 97, I quickly remembered.

The Hello, Dolly star was the toast of Broadway, and had iconic roles in the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. She was funny, cute, and had that interesting, slightly…

Autographed 'Thank You' and Christmas Cards for Critics

I always like to comment when movies have autograph scenes. The new movie “The Upside” (my review is here: https://fox5sandiego.com/2019/01/10/the-upside/ ) has two autograph scenes. In one of them, Bryan Cranston’s character talks about owning a lot of 1st edition books that are signed, that were gifts from his wife.…

The Time I Stole an Autographed Baseball

It’s strange that since I’m not the biggest baseball fan, that my next blog would also involve baseball. Yet a story popped into my brain that I hadn’t thought about since it happened when I was in 9th grade (more than 30 years ago).

The story actually starts when I was in 5th grade. A kid named Mike moved into town and everyone at our elementary school disliked him. He had this arrogance that was annoying, and his…

The Baseball Blog

Baseball might be my least favorite sport. Now, that doesn’t mean I’d turn down an autographed Mickey Mantle baseball (but I’d prefer his Topps rookie card). I’ve got about 10 signed baseballs (the Roger Maris one is probably my favorite).

Because I love football and find baseball to be boring, I thought George Carlin’s baseball/football bit was hysterical.

Yet I heard…

What Do Penny Marshall and LeBron James Have in Common?

It was sad news to hear that Penny Marshall died. It's even sadder that most people (over the age of 50), only know her from her TV work as Laverne on "Laverne and Shirley." She's directed some amazing films -- Big and A League of Their Own, both with Tom Hanks. Hey, there may be no "crying in baseball" but there can be crying for Marshall. Losing this talent, at age 75, is tragic.

I met her once. Well, strike that. I didn't meet her. She walked by me, and we smiled at each other. I…

What do Jennifer Lopez and Oscars Have in Common?

With a lot of awards being announced for movies, but still a month away from the Oscar nominations, I heard this story about the Profiles in History auction that had two Oscars. The best picture award for “A Gentleman’s Agreement,” the 1947 movie with Gregory Peck, went for almost half a million. The best picture statuette for “Mutiny on the Bounty” got about that half that. Now, there’s a rule that states you’re not allowed to sell the Oscar you win (and…

My Quest to Get Bruce Springsteen (or anyone in his band)

I’ve been on a quest to get my wife some Bruce Springsteen autographs. I make that plural, meaning...from the Boss himself, or any of the musicians in his band. Now, she’s not even into autographs. In fact, the only time I ever saw her excited about meeting somebody famous, is when she attended an event with me and got to take a picture with Rami Malek (pre-Freddie Mercury), because she liked the show “Mr. Robot”. But she’s from New Jersey, and it’s required…

The Hugh Hefner Auction

One of my autograph buddies always makes the two-plus hour drive to L.A. for autographs. Sometimes I hit him up to get me a signature, if it’s a book signing or something like that. I remember once he called me at a book signing and said, “For $50, they have this book that shows every Playboy centerfold, starting with the first issue.”

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner was signing them, and I said “Nah. I’m not that into…

My Interview with Steve Poltz -- the best singer/songwriter you've never heard of

Having been born and raised in San Diego, and a huge music lover, I was always a fan of Steve Poltz. His first band The Rugburns had great live performances, and clever songs. The band was filled with other talented San Diego music legends. Poltz ended up being named “San Diego’s Most Influential Artist of the Decade.” He had songs that were rock, folk, punk, satire...hell, he did an album of tunes that were all answering machine messages (appropriately named…

BUGS BUNNY doesn't know who drew this: CHUCK JONES or VIRGIL ROSS

Does anyone have an idea who drew this animation production sketch on an animation sheet in graphite pencil over blue pencil?

Probably Chuck Jones or Virgil Ross.

Does CJ-53 indicate it's Chuck Jones?  What does M-17 mean?

Bugs doesn't seem to know. Neither do I.  Do you?…

GFA Authentication.com Search Uncovers Massive Amounts of Impossibly Identical "Autographs": Mantle, DiMaggio, Ali, Clapton, More

This is the last post in my 4-part series revealing the truth about GFA (Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators) authenticated autographs. The truth may shock you if you own any...unless you've tried to sell them.

Before I start on this most explosive, revealing, compelling and disturbing blog on Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators (GFA and Stephen Rocchi/John Gorajczyk), please observe the below…

Productive Fall Graphing The Land

I believe my last blog was in August and there were more hits than misses this fall.

Two Hall of Famers- Steve Cropper and Dave Mason were touring together and made a stop at a local venue.  Great show and Cropper has great stories.  Both did the merch table after the show.  Mason was pleading with patrons not to ask Steve questions because he wanted to go back to the hotel. (Steve loves to tell stories- he told them anyway!)…

A Hitler Signed Photo You'd Never Expect to See

Sometimes the prices of things baffle me. Last year, a telephone owned by Hitler, used to issue commands during World War II, sold at auction for $243,000. That’s insane. And when I saw a story that showed an auction house had an autographed photo of Hitler with his arms…

The Morrissey Mob

When I was a teenager, Morrissey and The Smiths were huge. I was more of a Morrison and The Doors fan, but I liked a few of The Smith songs.

About 29 years ago, I was having dinner with a couple of women I’m friends with in downtown San Diego, and we walked out of a restaurant and nearby was a concert hall. There was a tour bus with about 50 fans surrounding it, screaming as if The Beatles were inside. We walked…

What Do El Chappo and O.J. Simpson Have in Common (aside from the obvious)

Mexican drug lord “El Chapo” is in jail, and potential jurors at his federal trial in New York are being called in. One that was dismissed was a Michael Jackson impersonator. That would be odd enough, but hey...we’re autograph collectors. Here’s the weird one we can appreciate. Sort of. A juror was dismissed after he asked Joaquin Guzman (his real name) for his autograph. I first heard that on The Daily Show.…

Neil Armstrong and JFK Auction Items

Some interesting John F. Kennedy items in the RR Auction that ends tomorrow. There’s a Harvard sweater, which would warm you nicely this time of year. I’d rather have the Commander-in-Chief bomber jacket, but that will probably be costly. Oh, and there are a lot of assassination-related items. That would include a handwritten letter from Lee Harvey Oswald, and an original window sash from the Texas School Book Depository.…
