What do Autographs and Stocks Have in Common?

I remember the first article I ever read about autographs was when I was 11-years-old (I’m in my mid-40s now). It was pages and pages, all about sports signatures. I read about Ty Cobb signing in green ink. Lots of good stories on Babe Ruth.

There was one story about NFL players. It said that of all the athletes, they get asked for autographs the least often. They speculated that was because they wore helmets and were harder to recognize, without a jersey that had a last name on the…

A Dopey Story

I've written a few books, the last one of which came out just over five years ago - Homemade Hollywood: Fans Behind The Camera, tracing the rise of "fan films"—those homemade Star Wars and superhero movies you find on the internet. It was also about the histories of amateur filmmaking and science fiction fandom, but mostly it was about people who dressed like Spider-Man and then swung off six-story buildings without a net, because "I needed the shot, man." It got good…

It took 47 years but I finally got that wiley Rascal (Gene Cornish, that is)

In 1966 when I was 13 years old I went to see the Young Rascals in Rochester, NY, my very first concert. After the show the band passed out photo cards and they were signing from the stage. I got Dino, Eddie and Felix, but not Gene Cornish who is from Rochester. All these years I dreamed of getting that space filled in on my card and 47 years later I did when I saw the re-united Rascals in San Francisco on October 12, 2013. I spotted Gene's fiancee just before intermission, but she said she…

Hitler and Hats -- Big Prices For Unusual Items

There’s always controversy when Nazi and Hitler memorabilia hit the market. I thought I’d make a quick mention of the latest at the start of this story. It involved two rare editions of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”, and they sold at an L.A. auction for $64,850.

The 1925 and 1926 editions were both signed, and of course, the purchaser wishes to remain anonymous.

Hitler gave the books to Josef Bauer, an early follower who participated in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch in Munich. They were…

The Pope, an Old Couple, and Pele walk into a bar....

The big story regarding “valuables” happened recently and by now, everyone has heard about it. An older couple walking their dog in Northern California and came across a few buckets of gold coins from the 1800s. They’re worth around $10 million, and while they were smart in not saying who they are or where they live (don’t need a bunch of people showing up with metal detectors…

Jethro Tull -- My Struggles Trying to Meet Ian Anderson and THE INTERVIEW!!

When I was a DJ at a classic rock radio station, my friends asked if I got sick of certain bands that seemed to get played endlessly. The answer was always no, because they have such a huge catalog of songs.

One of the bands that had over 10 songs always in rotation was Jethro Tull. They were also a band that would do great promotions and great concerts. I kept trying to get lead singer/flutist Ian Andersons autograph. It was difficult.

My friend Arnold, whose favorite band was…

Graphing as a Family

My wife and my kids decided to support my hobby and go try and get a few Sandy Koufax autographs today as he has a line up. He was picky and choosy with people in a group and people were getting hurt. I let them know ahead of time that we would have to be up super early and get there by 6 a.m., a good round number.

The gates opened at 9 and it was…

When Pens let you down!

You are lucky enough to meet your idols or at least get a friend who works at a venue to ask your heroes to sign something. You've brought along a great item and you're armed with pens/ permanent marker. And when you get the piece back, the damn pen has ceased or bled, basically mucked up that precious signing.

I had the pleasure of getting Cheap Trick to sign my copy of 'Budokan' I had waited years for them to play in Ireland and then they come...and I get the item signed and the…

Great deal for a Lee Van Cleef autograph

Lee Van Cleef is an incredibly tough autograph to get; however, I came across the first signed Lee Van Cleef check I've ever seen.  I already have a signed photo (which took me years to find and a lot of research to establish its authenticity), and if someone here needs a Lee Van Cleef, this is the autograph you want in your collection.  Bidding is at only $100; the signature is without question authentic.  Hope someone here get it.…

An incredible encounter with Bob Dylan, really

My family and I stopped at the Ariston Cafe in Litchfield, Il, during our drive up to Peoria the day before the concert.  It's a cool historic diner located on route 66 full of neon lights and great food.  They gave us a bunch of complimentary goodies I'm guessing for no other reason than we have cute kids.  I thought J.D. might like one of the route 66…

Shirley Temple & Grace Kelly

Both Shirley Temple and Grace Kelly signed autographs through the mail after their movie careers.

22-year-old Shirley Temple married Charles Black in 1950 and signed "Shirley Temple Black" if you sent her a movie still.

26-year-old Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 and signed "Grace de Monaco" on photographs picturing her as Princess.

BUT if you sent her a movie still or anything related to her movie career, she would sign "Grace Kelly" because she…

RIP Sid Caesar - A comedy legend!

It's with great sadness that I see comedy legend Sid Caesar has passed away today at the age of 91!  Like any fans of classic comedy Caesar would always bring a smile to your face. Dig out that copy of 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad ,Mad World' or Mel Brooks 'Silent Movie' and remember the great man!

Derek Sanderson Jeter, An end of an era is upon us.

With todays announcement of this being Derek Jeter's final season I'd like to start a blog for people to reflect back on a great untarnished career.

In my opinion being a Yankees fan of not you have to respect Derek Jeter as a Hall of Fame Baseball player.

All the Best this year Derek as you make your final tour.. Maybe you can get one more ring before you go

rockinmemories4U selling fake autographs please check out and pass the word

I was a victim of a company called rockinmemories4u. I purchased items from them, ranging from albums to guitars. Only recently when I went to have them certified was I informed that they were fake signatures.  I was so embarrassed and pissed. The items were purchased over a year ago. Now that I look at what they are selling I know now . How stupid I was, thinking I can get signed items from deceased musicians for such cheap prices. I bought a beatles signed album for 1,300.00 Please pass…

What is your best thrift Store/ second hand store autograph discovery?

Interested in hearing about any gems that people may have picked up whilst scouring the shelves of second hand stores, thrift shops, markets etc. I picked up this Duff McKagan autobiography this week only discover it was signed for 4 Euro ($5) in my local second hand book shop (Sure it's dedicated, but I don't mind!). And a while back a Neil Gaiman - Anansi Boys 1st edition signed book that I discovered for 1 Euro ($1.35). They weren't advertised as signed, just stuck in with other books and…

The Devil Went Down to Milwaukee -- Looking for a Strad to Steal...

You know how each year at the Oscars they show the guys that counted the ballots walking up the red carpet with the suitcases? I seem to recall a time when those suitcases were actually handcuffed to their wrists.

In movies we get the occasional scene with somebody carrying a suitcase that’s cuffed to their person…only to have the bad guy chop off their arm and carry…
