Meeting a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer

I love classic rock bands. The one thing that doesn’t work for me is when I’m not a fan of the vocalist. I might lose a lot of cred when I say I’m not a Bob Dylan fan, but I just can’t take his voice. Sure, he has a few songs I like and his “Blood on the Tracks” is one of the greatest albums ever (I bought an autographed copy at auction years ago).

So when I was in…

Black Friday Blog -- Cool Things You Can Purchase

Since we all hate dealing with the Black Friday shopping, I thought I’d start this blog off with a Black Friday deal you might be interested in. I heard about this a few weeks ago, and thought it would be lame. When I discovered it was kind of cool, I thought I’d give you the heads up. I had read that Barnes & Nobles bookstores would bring out autographed copies of various books, as one of many incentives to get people into their stores this weekend. The picture in the paper showed a…

Piedmont Auctions Mickey Mantle Autographed Photograph Forgery COA Authentic Autographs Unlimited Drew Max AAU

Check out these ugly Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, etc. forgeries listed by Piedmont Auctions under the AuctionZip platform.

These are obvious and typical forgeries that we see listed and sold on EBay every day.

The worthless COAs are from Authentic Autographs Unlimited (AAU) and Drew Max/Marc Goldman.

Drew Max, of course, calls…

Part 2 Howard Thompson (Help Me Howard) Pix11 Reveals True Story About The Forgeries Sold By Bergen County NJ’s Baseball Memorabilia Auction Drew Max COA AAU

Following my original thread (link below) on the forgeries sold by the Bergen County Prosecutor (and Caspert Auctioneers & Appraisers), Howard Thompson (Help Me Howard) of Pix11 Channel 11 here in New York produced a two-part follow-up on the forgeries and how they were made available to the public.

First, the link to my original thread:…

Another Week of Rock

Four different classic rock acts came through NE Ohio last week and I decided to go to 3 of the shows.  First, Todd Rundgren came to Kent for "An Unpredictable Evening".  I'm not a huge Todd fan, but I do like his music so I decided to take a chance to see if anyone had an extra ticket to this sold out show.  Luckily,  got a $40 for $30 ( I love not paying full price).  Todd and his band sounded very good and played a variety of

cover songs including 96 Tears, Muskrat Love, and Fire.…

Doors autograph - real ?

Hello--  A relative wanted me to find out if her Doors autographed photo appears to be genuine.  It was acquired via mail from a fan club back in the 60's and was apparently taped on someone's wall.  Please tell me if you think it is real & how much it might be worth.  Thanks.

A Fish Called Wanda -- why John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis Won't Sign my DVD

When I was a little kid, I loved collecting autographs. It could be the local newscaster or anybody like that. As I got older, I had to be a fan of the person before approaching them with pen in hand.

With the San Diego Chargers Blood Drive coming up, I remembered the first time I realized my autograph collecting was in check. My friend and I went to donate blood (I’ve…

Need help identifying this

I picked up a couple of sketches from an estate sale over the weekend, one is Harry James and this one.  I cannot figure out who this is, any help would be greatly appreciated.  I know the artist is Dorothy Ahrens, she did this in pencil and the autograph is made out to her.  Thanks for any help on this.…

Talking Music and Autographs with Larry Tamblyn of The Standells

My favorite ‘60s band is The Doors. They’re closely followed by The Beatles. Yet one thing I’ve found when I became a movie critic 25 years ago was…there’s nothing interesting about asking somebody their favorite movie or favorite band. You always hear the same answers. I like to ask people the movie they love that everyone hates. When it comes to music, I like…

Warning! Don't ask Ewan McGregor for an autograph

Here's what Ewan McGregor thinks of Autograph hunters. Just thought I should share this if anyone was thinking of approaching him, I'd think twice!

From the article:

Ewan McGregor has branded autograph hunters "parasitical lowlifes".

The 43-year-old actor - who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in 'Star Wars Episode I-III' - insists he rarely meets real fans, just people who want to make money from his signature.

Asked how 'Star Wars' fans have responded to him, he told…

Have Lunch With a TV Star, and a Coffee Table Book That's $5,000

I’ve talked with filmmakers and other movie critics about how sometimes crowd-funding campaigns have changed a lot. It used to be a filmmaker that didn’t have money, could go on Kickstarter or some site like that, and people would donate to help them finance their film. Somewhere along the line, big name actors that have money, used the site. That upset a lot of people. It…

The Cream Rises to the Top -- RIP Jack Bruce

Jack Bruce was the first autograph I got. Sort of. I mean, it was the first autograph I ever got that I asked another person to get for me. I had just started working in radio, and was 20-years-old. An afternoon DJ was going to be interviewing him, and one of my all-time favorite albums was the Cream record “Disraeli Gears.” I didn’t think it would be professional for me to just “show up” at a time I wasn’t working, and bother the talent for a signature; but the DJ was a nice guy and I knew…

Birdman and John Wayne Gacy

As a movie critic, if a film has scenes with autographs in them, I like to let you guys know. The latest is the movie “Birdman.” It stars Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts. I’m sure most of you have seen the scene in which Keaton is walking around New York in his underwear. This happened because he’s backstage smoking, in a robe, waiting for his last…

My week of rock

The concerts keep happening in Northeast Ohio and luckily for me they have taken place at smaller venues.  The first show was last Friday as Eddie Money took the stage for 2 shows at Tangiers in Akron- a small dinner theater place that has brought in some pretty big names over the years.  Between the 2 shows, Eddie was signing items at the merchandise table.  I had brought 2 lp's with me to get signed.  I didn't really want to buy a t-shirt but some of the proceeds went to the Fallen Hero's…

Searching For Kurt Cobain II :)

Nirvana induction into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame earlier this year had created a flood of Nirvana signed memorabilia on the market. Unfortunately most of the items offers were fakes.

Back in August this year a seller on an EBay was offering a signed LP with Kurt Cobain autograph and doodle. Here is a picture of the LP that was offer for sale.…

A Dream Come True -- I Met Alan Arkin at the San Diego Film Festival

I wrote about the latest San Diego Film Festival for Fox 5 San Diego (feel free to go there and check out my movie reviews). I thought for autograph collectors, I’d shorten it significantly and talk about the autograph aspects of it.

Film festivals are a great place to score autographs, but as I’ve told the collectors before, these actors think a lot of…
